You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown

The Bay St. Louis Little Theatre will open its final show of the 2015-2016 season with the musical comedy “You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown” based on the comic strip “Peanuts” by Charles M. Schulz with music and lyrics by Clark Gesner. It originally premiered off-Broadway in 1967 featuring Gary Burghoff as Charlie Brown.  The 1999 revival received two Tony Awards. “This show has a very special place in the Little Theatre history because it was the first show chosen to be performed after Katrina. We had no theater building then, so we performed the show in the Bay City Grill in the Depot District. The show is a reprisal with most of that original cast returning to their roles. There was so much chaos in our lives at the time, we never could have imagined that ten years later, we would be taking the stage resuming the same roles,” stated Theatre President Cheryl Grace.

Charlie Brown is the central character of the long-running comic strip Peanuts. He frequently suffers, and as a result, is usually nervous and lacks self-confidence. He is both pessimistic and optimistic.  His attitude changes daily.  Some days he is afraid to go out because the day might end spoiled. Some days he hopes for the best and tries hard to accomplish things. Throughout the play, his friends give their various opinions of him. On this day, they are calling him “a good man.”

“None of the cast is actually six years old. And they really don’t look like Charles Shulz’ “Peanuts” cartoon characters.  But this doesn’t seem to make that much difference once we are into the play, because what they are saying to each other is with the openness of that early childhood time, and the obvious fact is that they are all really quite fond of each other.” – Clark Gesner.

The show is directed by Larry Clark and produced by Cheryl Grace. The cast includes Larry Clark, Lex Mauffray, Kathy Mauffray, Chris Flynn, Gary Taylor, and Cheryl Grace. Cathy Henley is music director. Cathy Henley and Richard O’Briant are the show musicians.  Daryl Himel is the show costumer. Laurie Spaschak is set designer. Set construction is by Dean Noel. Beverly Vincent is manager of sound and lights.

The show dates and times are July 8, 9, 15, 16 at 8pm and July 10 and 17 at 2pm.
