’Night, Mother

The Bay St. Louis Little Theatre will open its final production of the 2013 – 21024 season.  The final show of the season is 1983 Pulitzer Prize winning play “ ‘Night, Mother” written by Marsha Norman.  It is a two-character show that played on Broadway for a year and received four Tony Award nominations.  The 1986 film version of the play starred Sissy Spacek and Anne Bancroft.  Currently, Oprah Winfrey is in talks to make her Broadway debut with  “ ‘Night,Mother.”

“’Night, Mother” is a fine example of the art of storytelling, it is a brilliant play.”

The story thrusts the audience into the heart of the story’s question:  What would you do if someone you loved sat down with you one evening and calmly told you that they were going to end their life before morning?  The story then unfolds and audiences are strategizing along with the storyline to change the evening’s plan.  Audiences also attempt to determine if the loved one is kidding, attempting to get attention, or reaching out for help.

“….honest, uncompromising, lucid, penetrating, well-written, dramatic, and…unmanipulatively moving…

Because this play commonly provokes audiences into wanting to know more, the Little Theatre is adding something different to this production.  After each show, the audience is invited to remain and visit with the cast and director to talk about the characters, the process of rehearsals, the character motives, the character relationships, and anything else that the audience would like to explore.  Audiences who stay for the new series called “Chat with the Cast” will be treated to wine and cookies.  All are invited.

The show is directed by Gary Taylor and produced by Cheryl Grace.  The cast is Cheryl Grace and Kathe Newcomb.  Set construction and design is by Dean Noel.

The show dates and times are July 11, 12, 18, and 19 at 8pm and July 13 and 20 at 2pm.

Doors open one hour before the show and seating starts 30 minutes before each show.

Tickets for the show can be purchased online or purchased at Maggie May’s at 126 Main Street, or Twin Light Creations at 136 Main Street, or the Alice Moseley Museum in the Train Depot.  Ticket fees are $14 adults, $10 Seniors 65+, veterans, military, and students with ID, and $6 for children 12 and under.  Seat reservations can be made online or by calling 228-467-9024 or email the Little Theatre.  Reservations for seats must be made for all ticket holders including season ticket holders to be able to accommodate the show’s audiences.
