“A powerful production that makes you catch your breath.”

The Bay St. Louis Little Theatre presents its second show of the season “Road to Mecca” by Athol Fugard on November 15th. It is based on the life of Helen Martins, the artist whose home was established as one of the highest attended museums in her country. The play was adapted to a movie starring Kathy Bates and the author himself.   The play won the New York Drama Critics Circle Award for Best Foreign Play.

“Glows with a rare luminosity and intensity. Athol Fugard’s latest play…is also his most eloquent and transforming.”

“One of Fugard’s simplest, most beautiful plays.”

This is an unusual drama about Miss Helen, an old Boer woman who lives alone in the South African boondocks. Helen found a new world for herself when most people are slowing down their life. She started creating sculptures which she calls her Mecca. A young woman who was once helped by Miss Helen has traveled hundreds of miles to help her in a time of crisis Miss Helen is in danger of being sent to an old folks’ home by a narrow minded minister who considers her sculptures a public nuisance. A penetrating study of the role of the artist in any society, this important play was produced in London and New York to great critical acclaim.

The show is directed and produced by Cheryl Grace. Jen Coulter is assistant director. The cast includes Cheryl Grace, Jen Coulter, and Paul Bernard.  Jen Coulter did set design and construction. Volunteer coordinator is Rachel Anderson. Sound effects and promotion are done by Clayton Pennylegion.
